Cambridge SoundWorks Newton Series T300 tower speakers
Date Published: 1/9/08
In today's world of surround sound and home theater, small speakers draw the most attention. This is in sharp contrast to just a few years ago when tower speakers ruled the world of audio playback. Ah, for the good old days. The Cambridge SoundWorks Newton Series T300 is a fine example of a tower speaker small enough to work in a five-channel system but big enough to pump out authoritative stereo sound. Even if you prefer surround sound to stereo, it makes sense to use good towers as the front stereo pair in a 5.1 system.
Each T300 uses the same 1-inch silk dome tweeter, 4-inch midrange, and powered 10-inch subwoofer (with 10-inch passive radiator) as the Cambridge SoundWorks' higher-priced T500. However, the T300 speakers utilize two midranges instead of the 6-1/2-inch mid-bass driver of the T500. As a result, the sound of the T300 is good, but it lacks a bit of upper bass punch. Despite this, the built-in 150-watt subwoofer amplifier provides solid deep bass, so only the most demanding audiophiles will notice that the higher bass frequencies are missing.
The cabinets are available in blonde maple, mahogany veneer, and slate-gray finishes. The T300's sound quality far surpasses most small satellites, and its powered subwoofer can match many low- and mid-range subs as well. While not cheap, the T300 tower speakers deliver an excellent sonic performance.
The MSRP of $1,500 is per pair.
