Cambridge SoundWorks MovieWorks 108 home theater speaker system

Date Published: 1/8/08

Cambridge SoundWorks' MovieWorks 108 is a very good compact home theater speaker system. The MovieWorks 108 satellite/subwoofer package uses four identical Newton Series MC100 speakers for the front left/right and rear left/right channels, and it includes a center-channel speaker and a BassCube 8S subwoofer. The speakers are available in slate or white.

Each MC100 uses a two-way design with a substantial 3-1/2-inch composite midrange driver balanced with a 3/4-inch silk dome tweeter, producing an extremely smooth high-end response. The center channel adds a second midrange driver for the all-important transmission of movie dialogue. Configured with the tweeter between the two midrange drivers, the center channel provides a very solid and convincing image.

All of the speakers have asymmetrical ABS cabinets that reduce distortion, resonance, and stray reflections. Although they have slightly different configurations, by using the same components, these speakers create a fluid soundstage. The satellites and center channel are all magnetically shielded for placement near a television monitor, and they have a frequency response of 100Hz to 22,000Hz.

The BassCube 8S subwoofer is the same model used in many other MovieWorks theater systems, and it performs reasonably well in spite of its low power. It has an 8-inch downward-firing driver that is powered by a modest 50-watt amplifier. The subwoofer includes a few convenience features, such an automatic on/off switch. There are line- and speaker-level inputs, so even with a basic A/V system, connecting the BassCube is hassle-free. The frequency response is 39Hz to 200Hz. For a very smooth high-end response and accurate bass, the Cambridge SoundWorks MovieWorks 108 is a simple solution in a compact package.

Warranty
2 years subwoofer amplifier, 10 years speakers
