The Bunn Generation Coffee Brewer NHBX is a commercial-quality machine designed for home use. From the start, we could tell that this machine was different. The six-step initial setup seemed a bit superfluous on first glance, but is actually key to this unit's amazingly fast brewing.

The Bunn Commercial Style Brewer consists of a white or black and stainless-steel base with a built-in water reservoir, slide-out cupcake-shaped filter basket and 10-cup glass carafe with lid. An internal stainless-steel tank with its own 800-watt heater keeps the water preheated (at a temperature of 200 degrees Fahrenheit) and ready for brewing. By prepping the machine for first use, and allowing an initial heating cycle of 15 minutes, you ensure that the unit is ready to deliver a pot of aromatic coffee in as little as 3 minutes.

This coffeemaker is designed to remain plugged in at all times, except during the initial setup or when cleaning. Doing so allows the unit's tank heater to function properly so that the coffeemaker is ready at a moment's notice. If you plan to be away for a few days, you can use the vacation switch to deactivate the power. Whenever the power has been shut off, however, you need to repeat the initial 15-minute warm-up period before brewing.

For those who need their coffee fast, this machine is a dream. As you pour fresh, cold water into the top-loading reservoir, the heated water is displaced and flows through the filter basket and into the carafe, in literally minutes. The flavor of the brewed coffee isn't lost in the process either. On the contrary, the coffee is hot and exceptionally flavorful, without any bitter overtones.

This model has a standard "on" switch and the vacation switch. The brew cycle is activated when you pour water through the top of the machine. The "on" switch activates the unit's warming plate, however, which you must remember to turn off when the coffee carafe is empty.

We loved the design, which offers easy front access to the reservoir via a pour-through screen in the lid. A swivel lid can be moved aside for filling and replaced to keep the heat in the tank where it belongs. And, although there is no programmable function or pause-to-serve, the extremely fast brewing eliminates the usual wait time so you don't need the added functions.

The Bunn Generation Commercial Brewer can also dispense 4-10 cups of hot water into the carafe. Simply omit the coffee grounds in the filter basket. This unit comes with an initial supply of Bunn cupcake-style paper filters.
