Brother PT-80
Date Published: 12/15/06
Brother's PT-80 label writer is a bit larger than many models, measuring almost 7x4 inches, but if you don't need a label writer you can operate with one hand, the PT-80 can give you some nice features at an impressive price.
One benefit of a larger label writer is a larger keyboard. The PT-80 uses a familiar QWERTY layout, and it's pretty comfortable to use. Don't expect to hold the PT-80 and use it, though; it's best used while resting on a desk or shelf.
As you might expect from a sub-$30 label writer, the PT-80's features are pretty basic. It runs from four AAA batteries but has no power cord available. The 12-character LCD isn't as big as we'd like to see. Only two tape sizes--1/2 and 3/8 inches--work with this label writer, and only one font is available. The PT-80 prints at speeds of about 0.30 inches per second.
Pro: Very low price, large keyboard
Con: Feature set could be better
