Brother's PT-1000 label writer provides all of the basic features you'll need in a handheld unit.

The PT-1000 probably isn't going to meet the needs of a busy SOHO environment; its features are too basic. The PT-1000 offers two fonts and eight different text styles. You can select from five different text sizes, up to 9.1 mm in height. It can use three different thermal tape sizes, ranging from 0.25 to 0.5 inches in width. The PT-1000 uses a manual cutter, which can be a hassle if you're making dozens of labels.

The PT-1000's LCD is a little disappointing, as it can only display eight characters at one time. The unit runs from six AAA batteries, or you can purchase an AC adapter separately.

The Brother PT-1000 is easy to hold with one hand and operate with the other, although the ABCD layout and smallish keys won't be comfortable for everyone to use.
