Brother MFC-7220

Date Published: 7/17/07

Someone looking for laser-quality prints in a multifunction device usually must open his wallet . . . and open it very wide. Brother has changed that mindset and broke the $200 price barrier, however, with its MFC-7220 unit. The MFC-7220 includes all four primary functions that you'd expect to find in a multifunction device.

The MFC-7220's print function operates at a maximum resolution of 1200x600 dpi, and it delivers extremely sharp text prints. However, as with most laser devices, the MFC-7220 only can print in black; it has no color capabilities. This unit also doesn't run very fast, especially for a laser device, offering only a maximum print speed of 20 ppm in "Draft" mode. It runs much more slowly in "Best" mode.

This unit's fax function works well for a low-priced unit, offering a maximum sending speed of 10 ppm. The MFC-7220 can store up to 500 pages in memory if this unit's 250-sheet paper tray is empty. Brother has included a corded telephone handset with the MFC-7220, meaning you potentially can save some space on your desk by eliminating your telephone. The MFC-7220's 20-page automatic document feeder is a handy option.

Unfortunately, the MFC-7220's copier and scanner functions are well below average. The copier runs as speeds up to 20 ppm in "Draft" mode. However, the unit only can resize originals at between 50 and 200 percemt. The scanner's optical scan resolution is a poor 200x400 dpi, which only is good enough for basic text documents.

The MFC-7220 isn't for everyone. If you need laser-quality text printing, copying and faxing, this unit will deliver at a low starting price. However, because it runs very slowly compared to most other laser multifunction devices, it is not designed for a busy office setting. And the MFC-7220's copier and scanner functions aren't as useful as they should be, which lessens the value of this multifunction device.

Pros: Low starting price, laser print quality, good fax feature
Cons: Poor copy function, poor scan function, print speed could be better
