Brother's MFC-640CW multifunction device isn't going to offer any single top-of-the-line function. But its overall set of features will give SOHO users a good all-around color inkjet unit.

The MFC-640CW's printer operates at speeds up to 20 ppm in black and 15 ppm in color. This multifunction device's 6000x1200 dpi maximum resolution is good, and you can print photos directly from some memory cards.

The fax capabilities of this unit could be better; it can send documents at speeds of only 10 ppm. You can store up to 480 pages in memory, though, if its 100-sheet paper tray is empty.

The MFC-640CW's copier can resize originals at between 25 and 400 percent, working at speeds up to 17 ppm in black and 11 ppm in color. The scanner function operates at an optical resolution of 600X2400 dpi.

Finally, the MFC-640CW works over a network and offers wireless networking capabilities, which are handy features for a budget-priced multifunction device.
