Brother MFC-440CN

Date Published: 7/17/07

Brother's MFC-440CN multifunction device includes several features typically found in a more expensive unit, including networking capabilities and a 2-inch LCD for previewing photos that can rotate away from the device for easier viewing.

The MFC-440CN includes all four major functions found in a multifunction, which also doesn't always happen with a unit in this price range. The unit's scanner could be better, but it's adequate for average jobs, offering an optical scan resolution of 600x2400 dpi. The MFC-440CN can send faxes at speeds up to 10 ppm, and it can hold up to 400 pages in its 32MB of memory. The copier runs at speeds up to 18 ppm in "Draft" mode, and you can resize original documents at between 25 and 400 percent. The MFC-440CN also includes a 10-page automatic document feeder, which is handy for copying and faxing multiple-page documents.

Although the unit's other features are adequate, it's the MFC-440CN's printer that will provide the greatest benefits, especially for photo printing. This device can print at very high resolutions (up to 6000x1200 dpi), which is great for photos. Using the unit's LCD, you can print photos directly from a memory card as well. As an additional handy feature, the MFC-440CN includes a specialty 4-by-6-inch tray for holding up to 20 sheets of photo paper. You don't have to constantly switch between plain paper and photo paper, thanks to the second tray.

The biggest drawback to the MFC-440CN is its color print quality. To print photos or graphics at an acceptable quality, you'll have to always operate in "Best" mode, and this unit runs painfully slow in "Best" mode.

Finally, the MFC-440CN is not a heavyweight device; its maximum monthly print cycle is 2,500 sheets. If you don't need heavy-duty capabilities, this unit's low price makes it a tempting option. Just don't expect fast overall performance, especially with photo printing.

Pros: Low price, all four functions included, second paper tray, LCD screen for photo printing
Cons: Overall speed is below average, photo printing can be very slow, not designed for busy SOHO setting

Warranty
1-year limited
