Brother HL-2070N network-ready laser printer
Date Published: 3/30/06
Brother's HL-2070N is a budget-friendly choice for low-volume use in a home office or small business. It includes built-in 10/100 BaseT Ethernet connectivity, so you can connect it to a wired home or office network right out of the box. However, you can't connect it to a computer unless you remembered to pick up a parallel or USB 2.0 cable (around $12 to $20), because the package doesn't include one.
The HL-2070N is surprisingly lightweight and compact for a laser printer. It will easily squeeze into a crowded home office, and you won't mind moving it if you tend to rearrange your office often.
The printer ships with a 250-sheet paper tray, which is adequate for personal or low-volume business use, and the output area holds up to 100 sheets of plain paper. A single-sheet manual bypass feature can handle envelopes and heavier paper stocks, including labels, card stock, and transparencies.
Four LED lights on the top left side of the printer (Toner, Drum, Paper, Ready) display the printer's current status. A Go button located underneath the LED lights can wake the printer from a period of inactivity, cancel a print job or clear the printer after an error.
The HL-2070N supports printing resolutions of up to 2,400X600 dpi, but output quality is mixed. Text is sharp, even at small font sizes, but line art and grayscale images are disappointing for a laser printer. The rated print speed of up to 20 pages per minute is respectable, but not extraordinary. On the plus side, jobs are processed at the printer, rather than at the computer, so you won't have to sit around waiting for print jobs to finish before you can move on to the next task.
The package includes a starter toner cartridge (up to 1,500 pages) and a drum (up to 12,000 pages). The HL-2070N ships with 16MB RAM, which is not upgradeable. If you want to connect the HL-2070N to a wireless network, a wireless print server is available for $249.99.
Pro: Inexpensive, lightweight, and compact. Network ready. Text output quality is above average to excellent.
Con: Poor graphics output. No option to expand memory or paper capacity. Wireless network connectivity is an expensive option.
