The Broilmaster Super Premium "P" Gas Grill is a top-of-the-line grill that is built to outperform and outlast many other models.

The model we tested was a Super Premium P3S grill with a PC2 cart and black folding shelves. Because this grill is built to your specifications, you can select from a variety of standard and optional accessories to design the grill of your dreams.

We were impressed with the basic design, which incorporates a laundry list of exceptional features. The grill body itself is molded from extra-thick aluminum castings (the thickest in the barbeque industry), which proved to be excellent at retaining and redistributing the heat inside the cooking area. The bottom casting is extra deep to allow more space between the burners and the cooking grids. The extra space protects delicate foods from scorching.

This grill has Broilmaster's patented stainless-steel bowtie burner -- a two-part tube burner system that begins at the center of the grill and extends out in a double trapezoid pattern, which resembles a bow tie. Each side of the bowtie burner is controlled by a separate burner knob, with settings from low to high. Because the bowtie tubing pattern is actually longer than a traditional straight burner, there are more flame ports and consequently more heat generated over a wider area. With both burner knobs set to high, this baby heats up fast! The hood thermometer registered 500 degrees Fahrenheit at the 5-minute mark and topped 600 degrees at 8 minutes. The grill has a total 40,000 Btu of cooking power.

The Broilmaster Super Premium Grill P3S comes with three cast-stainless-steel cooking grids, each measuring 8.5x17 inches, for a combined 442 square inches of direct broiling rack. There is also a unique fold-out stainless-steel 5.5x23.5-inch wire warming rack, which extends to 10.5x23.5 inches for more than twice the normal warming rack space.

The entire grill -- from hood to base -- is made from top-quality corrosion-resistant materials, right down to the stainless-steel nuts and bolts. The front control panel and PC2 pedestal base is made from stainless steel, as are the folding shelf brackets. There are three folding shelves (one on each side and one in front), which are designed to flip down to save space during storage. Each shelf provides approximately 192 square inches of usable space and has two molded cup holders, in addition to a molded pull handle. There are 12 utensil hooks -- probably more than you'll ever need or use. The side shelves are available in your choice of black Phenolic plastic, stainless steel, wood or a composite surface. Only the black plastic shelves are available in the fold-down design. An optional stainless-steel side burner can be mounted in place of the right side shelf.

A number of different cart mountings can be chosen as well. You can choose a wheeled or flat base, a painted steel cart or a permanent post mounting.

The cast stainless-steel grids deserve special mention. We were impressed with the fact that the three grids are reversible and adjustable to three different cooking heights. The stainless-steel grates are heavy and have a rough texture that delivers an even, consistent level of heat, which sears foods beautifully.

The different cooking levels are extremely handy when preparing delicate seafood entrees at the same time as a thick steak. By adjusting not only the burner temperature but also the grid height, you have full control over the cooking process. Just be sure to adjust the grates before you begin cooking, as the parts heat up very quickly.

Another unique feature on the Super Premium grill is the stainless-steel Smoker Shutter, which is a vertical-blind-like attachment that sits horizontally over the burner and can convert the grill to an indirect cooking system for smoking, slow roasting and more. An easy-to-use lever opens and closes the shutter, which generates steam from the juices and drippings that fall on it.

This grill also beats the competition in terms of required storage space. With its folding side and front shelves, the grill shrinks down to an amazing 27-inch width for easy storage. With the shelves extended, the width span is 64 inches.

Other features (almost too numerous to mention) include: a calibrated heat indicator; precision brass gas valves; a stainless-steel flavor screen and heat shield, which deflects wind for precise flame control and also vaporizes drippings for added smoke flavor; a pushbutton electronic igniter; and an oversize stainless-steel handle with cushion foam grip.
