Broderbund Family Tree Maker 2006 Standard
Date Published: 2/26/08
Family Tree Maker is one of the oldest names in the genealogy software market. In its early incarnation, Family Tree Maker couldn't do much more than create simple genealogical charts, but it has evolved into a program that's capable of creating detailed family histories.
The 2006 version of Family Tree Maker doesn't offer many major changes from previous versions. Instead, there are a number of feature enhancements, as well as improvements to the interface.
Family Tree Maker is easy to install and easy to use, even if you know nothing about genealogy. An icon-based toolbar across the top of the work window provides easy access to all program functions. You start by entering what you already know about your family, including names, birth and death dates, and birthplaces. You can use Web Search and Ancestry.com, as well as other sources, to help fill in missing information. If you have previously created a family tree in another program, you can import the information in GEDCOM format.
A collection of templates allows you to customize your family trees and charts, including adding family photos and other images. You can print charts, create slideshows, or create and export family albums in PDF format to share with other family members, as well as publish them to the Family Tree Maker web site. Family Tree Maker currently can't export information in HTML format, so you can't publish it to your own web site, other than as a downloadable PDF file.
The package includes 180 days of free access to Ancestry.com, giving you access to more than five billion records; an electronic family tree workbook; and a training DVD.
The Family Tree Maker web site (http://www.familytreemaker.com) includes tutorials, a searchable knowledge base, and extensive help files, which will be of particular interest to new users. The site also has message boards, where you can share tips and information with amateur and experienced genealogists.
Family Tree Maker 2006 isn't the most comprehensive genealogy software program on the market, but it remains one of the easiest to use.
Pros: Easy to use, offers a number of customization options, includes a six-month subscription to Ancestry.com
Cons: Unlike most modern programs, Family Tree Maker can't output pages in HTML format, you can only publish your pages to Family Tree Maker's web site
