BowFlex TreadClimber TC3000

Date Published: 11/14/07

The BowFlex TC3000 is a step up from the company's entry-level model in the TreadClimber line. TreadClimbers are innovative new machines that combine the movements of a treadmill with those of a stair stepper or climber. In effect, the TreadClimber burns calories through interval training; instead of using both a treadmill and a climber separately, the TreadClimber enables you to perform both exercises simultaneously. The two platforms on the TC3000 move up and down independently, as you would expect from a star stepper, but they also operate like two miniature treadmills.

Even for people who dislike traditional stair steppers because of their high impact on joints, the TC3000 will provide a welcome alternative. In addition to providing an effective cardio workout, the stepping motion of the TreadClimber offers great exercise for calves, buns, hamstrings and quadriceps without placing stress on the hips, knees or ankles. We also find that the walking motion feels more natural than using even a low impact elliptical machine, and by the end of a long workout our toes aren't numb, either. The unusual motion of the TC3000 takes some getting used to, but once mastered it provides an effective, strenuous workout.

Despite the many positive aspects of the TreadClimber TC3000, this is not a product for everyone. The TC3000 carries an MSRP that is significantly higher than that of a traditional stair stepper. It is also a more complex piece of equipment, so there is a greater potential for mechanical problems. Finally, we really disliked the inability to change resistance levels on this machine without interrupting a workout. Like the entry-level TC1000, this unit offers 12 different resistance levels that are changed by dialing a knob at the side of the machine, so you have to jump off to increase or decrease resistance mid-workout.

The TC3000 offers a powerful motor that delivers a maximum speed of 4 mph. The large LCD console displays workout statistics including speed, distance, time, calories per minute, total calories burned and total steps.

The BowFlex TreadClimber TC3000 delivers an effective low-impact workout and a more varied and enjoyable experience than a traditional stair stepper, but the awkward method of adjusting resistance is a major drawback.

Pros: Provides effective low-impact workouts, solid construction, better in many ways than entry-level model.
Cons: Awkward resistance adjustments, potential for mechanical problems
