Bowflex Series 5

Date Published: 1/4/08

Sandwiched between the Series 3 and Series 7 models, the Series 5 is the mid-range unit in the Bowflex range of treadmills. It offers a large running surface and solid power output, but for a few hundred dollars more, we recommend the higher-end Series 7 treadmill as a unit that provides better value.

The Series 5 offers the same large size running area of 60X20 inches as the Series 7 and a more powerful 2.5-horsepower motor than the Series 3. The speed ranges from 0.5 to 10 mph and the incline varies from 0 to 12 percent; both can be conveniently adjusted at the touch of a button. The folding design of the Series 5 allows for easy storage, although this is a heavy unit that weighs in at 249 pounds; while this makes for a sturdy machine, it also makes it cumbersome to move the treadmill very far, even after it has been folded. The maximum recommended user weight for the Series 5 is 300 pounds.

The deck cushioning on this treadmill provides good -- if not outstanding -- support. The Stride Zone deck suspension provides a padded surface that reduces the impact on knee, ankle and hip joints. The Series 5 treadmill also offers a good array of preset workouts, including two custom programs and a heart rate mode. Pulse is monitored via the handgrip sensors, although for safety reasons you shouldn't use the grips while jogging or running, which limits the functionality of this feature; we'd much rather see a wireless heart rate monitor for hands-free use on a treadmill. The 4-window LED display on this treadmill is bright and easy to read. The Series 5 also offers a number of extra convenience features such as twin water bottle holders and a built-in 3-speed cooling fan. The Bowflex Series 5 is a solid treadmill that delivers a good workout, but it is not the best value for the money in this price range.

Pros: Large running surface, power-assisted folding for easy storage, 12 workout programs
Cons: Better value can be found elsewhere

Warranty
15 years, frame; 10 years, motor; 2 years, parts; 1 year, labor
