The Lifestyle 48 sits atop Bose's collection of Lifestyle tabletop DVD home theaters. As with other top-end Bose systems, the Lifestyle 48 employs Bose's small but potent Direct/Reflecting cube speakers that provide a rich sound response while blending into the decor. The system also delivers a plethora of impressive features, including the ability to internally store and organize up to 340 hours of music.

This system comprises a disc player/receiver, five satellites speakers, an Acoustimass (subwoofer) module, and a comprehensive remote control. The disc player can handle DVD-Video, DVD-R, CD, CD-R/RW and discs holding MP3 files, and the receiver is able to internally decode Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks. Music from CD can be recorded to the hard drive; once stored, the integrated uMusic playback system can sort the files by listener preference and develop playlists of favorite music.

The five identical Direct/Reflecting cube speakers measure 4-1/2-inches high and are used only in top-end Bose systems. They provide good dispersion and a natural sound quality, and their diminutive size allows them to virtually disappear from view. The Acoustimass module contains power amplifiers as well as a subwoofer for deep bass. Using the included ADAPTiQ system, the Lifestyle 48 can automatically and optimally adjust the system's response to best fit a room's acoustics. The system also features Bose Link, which will interface with other Bose products (perhaps in other rooms) using optionally available hardware.

The Lifestyle 48 has numerous inputs and outputs, including component video, S-video, and composite video outputs (one of each), four analog audio inputs, four coaxial digital audio inputs, and one optical digital audio input. The system also has stereo analog outputs, a coaxial digital audio output and an optical digital audio output. The included radio-frequency (RF) remote control is many notches above the remotes usually found with home theater systems.
