Bose 901 Series VI stereo speakers
Date Published: 5/16/05
The original Bose 901 speakers created back in the 1960s were instant hits. Since then, there have been several new series of the 901 introduced. Each time, the improvements have been significant, and Bose has done it again with the Series VI.
The 901 Series VI speakers are the flagships of the Bose Direct/Reflecting design line. Each speaker contains a total of nine full-range drivers in an array that directs the sound toward the rear and sides, in addition to the front. This unique dispersion of sound creates a huge stereo image with virtually no localization to the speaker cabinets. The speakers are supplied with an separate, active equalizer that compensates for the change in the frequency spectrum as the sound is reflected.
More so than with other loudspeakers, it should be noted that speaker placement is very important for the Series VI. The owner's manual is helpful with this, but the most crucial aspect is that these units should not be placed in front of a highly sound-absorbent surface such as heavy drapes.
While terrific sonically, some of the earlier 901 models suffered from a lack of efficiency. Not so with the Series VI. A re-engineered voice coil improves that, while the speaker enclosure design and port configuration enhance low-frequency response. As always, Bose does not supply frequency response specifications, but the sound, especially with classical music, is stellar. The cabinets are available in walnut or black ash finishes. Those who haven't heard the 901 Series VI owe it to themselves and their music collections to give a listen.
The MSRP of $1,398.00 is per pair.
