Bose 161 bookshelf speakers
Date Published: 3/27/06
The Bose 161 speakers are small bookshelf models suitable as a stereo pair or as part of a multichannel home theater, and they provide good fidelity for music and movie playback.
Each speaker has a pair of Bose's 2-1/2-inch "Twiddler" full-range drivers that, when combined with the unique cabinet design, provide a clear and surprisingly loud sound. The 161 speakers also produce a good bass response, especially considering the small cabinet size. Bose incorporates its "Articulated Array" design to present a wide soundfield. In this respect, the 161s are very effective as surround speakers, and they can also serve well as stereo speakers when a large soundstage is desired.
The 161s are magnetically shielded, so they can be placed close to a conventional television without affecting the picture. Mounting brackets and other necessary hardware are included, and the speakers can be mounted horizontally or vertically (although horizontal mounting is recommended for best soundfield reproduction). The recommended power is 10 watts to 100 watts, rated from 4 ohms to 8 ohms.
Available in black or white, the Bose 161 speakers are a good example of small, cost-effective (the MSRP of $158 is per pair) speakers that deliver solid sound from a small package. They would be a smart choice for a modestly priced stereo or home theater system.
