Bosch 800 Series Nexxt Clothes Dryer WTMC8521UC
Date Published: 3/25/08
Bosch makes a number of dryers, but none that perform better or are quieter than the 800 Series Nexxt Clothes Dryer WTMC8521UC. If you're moving your laundry room upstairs near your sleeping quarters, you will want the quietest laundry equipment you can find -- especially if you're likely to throw in a load right before bed.
With a sound rating of just 64dB, this dryer is, at this writing, one of the quietest models sold in the United States. You will definitely hear it if it is placed in your bedroom, but if separated by a wall, the minimal noise it makes shouldn't be disturbing. For comparison purposes, the WTMC8521UC makes about the same amount of noise as operating an air conditioner or a sewing machine.
Although the most outstanding feature of this dryer is its quiet operation, we're also impressed with its size, style and performance. Unlike the first European models to show up in this country, the WTMC8521UC is full-size. Like a full-size American model, it measures 27 inches across and offers a large 6.7-cubic-foot capacity. The capacity is so large that it's almost indistinguishable from the 7.0-cubic-foot capacity of today's largest American-style front-loading dryers.
Unlike the least expensive of the Bosch models, the WTMC8521UC offers a feature we feel strongly about: a sensor. It's our opinion that a sensor is one of the most important features on a high-quality dryer. In this case the Bosch sensor, known as ECOSENSOR, protects your clothing from heat damage while conserving energy. It also monitors your clothing closely and allows you to precisely control the dryness level of each load. This sensor is so beneficial to proper drying that we can't see why you would bother to purchase a Bosch model without it.
When it comes to styling, this Bosch dryer is sleek and attractive. It offers an unusual see-through door, though we're not sure what purpose it serves. Since the controls are located on top of the unit, this model doesn't lend itself to under-counter or stacked installations. It can, however, be elevated on a pedestal.
For installations where the ultimate in quiet is a priority, the WTMC8521UC is our top-choice. If ultra-quiet isn't ultra-important, than one of Bosch's less expensive models with a sensor would be a value-smart buy.
Pros: One of the quietest dryers you can find, excellent sensor control, large capacity
Cons: Not recommended for stacking or under-counter installation
