Booster Car Seats: Handle With Care

Date Published: 03/23/2007

Booster car seat manufacturers add custom-fit features, but most important, EPS foam and side impact protection to their line ups. Learn about three standout models.

When it's time for a booster seat, parents search for the safest and most comfortable fit for their children. Fortunately, a number of innovative features make finding a safe and comfortable car seat easier. Look for new booster seat models that offer width and height adjustment, as well as side support when napping. Most booster car seats function as belt-positioning booster seats, and many convert to backless booster car seats. While most booster car seats now feature EPS foam lining, some only have lining in the head area, so be sure to check out our reviews for details. The booster car seats we've selected as the "best of the best" range in price from $150 to $80, and many offer nearly the same features.

Britax Monarch E9053E9

The Britax Monarch is a booster car seat that pays attention to safety, style and convenience. The Britax Monarch, which retails about $150, is designed for children weighing 30 to 100 pounds and up to 60 inches in height. It can convert from a belt-positioning booster to backless booster. As a belt-positioning booster, it is one of the easiest to use we've encountered, thanks to color-coded belt guides. It has an easily adjustable headrest and expandable, padded armrests. Just as we've come to expect from Britax, the Monarch features EPS foam lining, comfortable padding and a removable cover. We especially like the enhanced side protection, which the company calls TSIP (True Side Impact Protection). This feature is an innovative addition, and includes "wings" that surround the head and torso. Although some of the Monarch's competitors may have a "wing" style, the Monarch design provides more coverage than others we've tested. The Britax Monarch is easy to use, stylish and worth the expense.

Graco TurboBooster SafeSeat (Step 3) in Simpson Racing 8693SIM

The Graco TurboBooster SafeSeat (Step 3) in Simpson Racing is a great solution for pint-sized dragsters who need a belt-positioning booster car seat. It is designed for children weighing 30 to 100 pounds, and converts to a backless booster. At $119.99, it is pricier than some, but if you're a racing enthusiast, the Simpson Racing logo may just sway your pocketbook into making a purchase. The Graco TurboBooster SafeSeat in Simpson Racing has an EPS foam lining, easy-to-use belt-positioning guides, adjustable head support and padded wings for additional support. We give the Graco TurboBooster SafeSeat in Simpson Racing high marks for reaching out to a niche market with the comfort and safety features we've come to expect from Graco.

Eddie Bauer Adjustable High Back Booster Car Seat 22880

Here's a booster seat you can use long term. The Eddie Bauer Adjustable High Back Booster Car Seat 22880, a forward-facing car seat, comes equipped with a five-point harness and can hold children weighing as little as 22 pounds. And as your child grows, this car seat can be used as a belt-positioning booster for children weighing 40 to 100 pounds, and it can convert to a backless booster. A pair of built-in cup holders, the removable toddler pillow and padded armrests that pivot out of the way when necessary add to the convenience of this car seat. And what's great about it is that the five-point harness can be adjusted up front, with just one hand. This model features "wings" on each side of the head and shoulder area of the child for added protection. And the coordinating tan and plaid fabrics are attractive even if they are gender neutral.
