Bolens M762F lawn tractor
Date Published: 4/4/08
The Bolens M762F lawn tractor is an entry-level machine that is designed to be a basic mower for light duty residential use. While it does not excel in any one area of performance, its low price and respectable functionality make it worth considering for those who have small, relatively flat, routinely maintained lawns; medium-duty and heavy-duty tasks should be reserved for other, more powerful tractors.
In order to keep costs down, Bolens does not incorporate any luxury features into the M762F's design. The 15.5-hp Briggs & Stratton engine is good for light-duty mowing on flat terrain, but immediately feels strained on mild inclines. What's more, the engine is louder than those that are found on higher-end models. Bolens does offer a full array of optional attachments for multipurpose yard work, but the underpowered engine is really only suitable for easier jobs. The small 1.5-gallon fuel tank holds only enough gas for smaller yards without steep hills. The low top speed of 5.2 mph going forward on flat terrain renders this tractor inefficient for larger mowing jobs. The 18-inch turning radius is standard for most lawn tractors, and the M762F features responsive steering for cutting around obstacles and trees.
Operation of the tractor is achieved by simple controls. A hand-controlled lever adjusts the 38-inch cutting deck from 1.5 to 4 inches; 38 inches is a relatively small diameter for a cutting deck in this class, and the floatation on the deck is easily disrupted by bumps. We find the suspension of this tractor to be very rigid and rough in any setting other than a well-manicured lawn; the stiff ride is amplified when the engine has to strain to climb up hills and inclines. The seat is a basic, low-backed model that doesn't offer any compensation for the bumpy ride.
Bolens is owned by yard equipment company MTD, and despite the fact this is the only lawn tractor produced by Bolens, it shares a full set of attachments with its sister brands. For light-duty yard work, the mulching kit and bagging system are the best bets. A front dethatcher is also available, and you can add to your comfort with a sunshade. For winter jobs, you can opt for a snow blade and two-stage snow thrower, though be warned that the 15.5-hp engine will have a difficult time moving heavy snow. Bolens machines aren't necessarily known for their durability, though the 2-year warranty gives you some peace of mind when you utilize this tractor for medium-duty tasks.
Overall, the Bolens M762F lawn tractor is a decent choice for budget-minded consumers who want a no-frills machine that will do an adequate job in light-duty settings.
Pros: Inexpensive, good for light-duty jobs, good array of available attachments
Cons: Low-power engine and small cutting deck, rough ride, not suitable for tougher jobs
