Bolens 414A gas-powered push mower
Date Published: 4/2/08
The Bolens 414A is everything that a basic lawn mower should be: dependable, easy to use and capable of providing consistent performance. It includes many desirable performance features, and although it doesn't have a lot of the luxury upgrades for which you might hope (such as ball-bearings and single-level adjustment), it offers a lot of value for its relatively low price.
The 414A offers a steady 5.5-torque, 158cc Briggs & Stratton engine that's great for basic mowing needs. The pull-cord start requires priming, but is easy to use and starts consistently. The controls are intuitive and solid, and the push handle, while very simple, is comfortable and features a good height for a variety of different users. This model also handles extremely well; it is easy to maneuver and push, even though it has 7- and 8-inch bushing wheels. Each wheel has its own 9-position height adjustment; these can be a bit stubborn to reset at first, but seem to ease up a little after a few adjustments.
When it comes to actual mowing, the 414A's 21-inch cutting deck produces a fairly even cut. There are times you may need to backtrack in taller grass, but overall, it performs well on level and slightly hilly ground.
The 414A allows for mulching or bagging and comes with a mulching kit; mulching effectiveness is not great, but this is not unusual for a mower at this price point. The lack of a side-discharge option limits this machine's appeal a bit, but we suspect that this feature won't be missed as long as you're diligent about mowing frequently. The 414A comes with a fairly large 2.3-bushel bag; the bag's size is great for reducing the number of trips to the compost pile, but it can get very heavy when full. If you're dealing with significant elevation change on your property, this can be a concern and you may want to consider a self-propelled push mower instead. Also, the bag tends to drag on the ground even when not full, so be aware that it may wear out relatively early, requiring replacement of the bag.
Overall, the Bolens 414A provides what you would expect from an entry-level mower, but adds a bit when it comes to performance and reliability. It comes with a 2-year limited warranty, and an extended protection plan is available with retailers. If you're looking for a good-looking but "no frills" mower, this model is worth checking out.
