Blueair 601 Air Purifier

Date Published: 5/2/07

The Blueair 601 air purifier may cost a small fortune, but it's money well spent if you're in the market for clean air. Much to the relief of those who suffer from asthma or allergies, the Blueair 601 is a HEPA-type air filter that effectively clears rooms up to 679 square feet.

The Blueair 601 has three operating speeds, and makes six air changes per hour. We are pleased with its "run quiet" capabilities. When on the lowest speed, the Blueair 601's operating noise is not detectible. On the second and third speeds, the Blueair 601 can be heard, but the sound is still relatively silent; it seems more like white noise than noise pollution. It isn't until the Blueair 601 hits top speed that the noise becomes a bit distracting.

Unlike other air purifiers we tested, the Blueair 601 doesn't create a draft when it's in use. We find that an occasional vacuuming of the air inlets located near the bottom of the Blueair 601 is necessary. However, we don't believe this is more maintenance than what most other air purifiers require. The Blueair 601's air filter is easy to remove and replace, and this must be done every six months to keep the warranty in effect. The filters cost more than some, but they keep this model operating at maximum efficiency.

The Blueair 601 is available with a SmokeStop filter option, which come in groups of three and cost $179.95. The SmokeStop filters have more activated carbon for additional chemical adsorption.

Our one complaint: At 26 inches high and 20 inches wide, the Blueair 601 air purifier is bulky. That said, it is made of steel (not plastic), and its clean lines make it easier to blend into a room's decor. Plus, it has rollers that make moving it -- even on carpet -- a breeze. Overall, we find the Blueair 601 clears sizable rooms with ease, operates quietly and looks good doing it. The Blueair 601 air purifier may be more expensive than some, but in this case, it's worth it.

Pros: Clears rooms up to 679 square feet
Cons: Filters are pricey
