Black & Decker NST2036 cordless string trimmer

Date Published: 3/12/08

Black & Decker's NST2036 36-volt cordless string trimmer leads the way in high-powered performance. This battery-powered unit delivers all the trimming power you need; we first tested this super-duty machine on an overgrown weedy patch and were amazed at how quickly and cleanly it sliced its way through.

The cutting technology behind this tool lies with its super-efficient motor and its high-output 36-volt battery. Additionally, the NST2036's gear-driven transmission delivers no-stall torque for tougher cutting and increased run time. Black & Decker claims that this unit delivers a cut rate of 51 square feet per minute; we found this to be true as we trimmed along fences and edged around hillside plants and landscape beds.

We also like this model's variable speed trigger, which delivers up to 7,500rpm for superior cutting performance; this is especially impressive from a cordless unit. What's more, the sound that this unit produces is quite smooth.

Another feature that surprised us is the NST2036's 14-inch-wide cutting swath, which is an industry first for a cordless string trimmer; it allowed us to zip through tall grass in no time flat. String is dispensed via a bump-feed-style head with heavy-duty dual .080 line.

The large, easy-grip handle and telescoping straight shaft quickly adjust to accommodate different users and trimming conditions. The 36-volt nickel-cadmium battery delivers hundreds of recharge cycles and should last for years; the charger is included.

For a hardworking, energy-efficient trimmer that rivals the performance of a gas-powered model, we highly recommend the Black & Decker NST2036 cordless string trimmer.

Pros: Performance matching that of gas-powered trimmers, 36-volt rechargeable battery, gear-drive transmission with no-stall torque, variable speed up to 7,500rpm, telescoping shaft, 14-inch-wide cutting swath, shoulder strap, bump-feed dual-string advance, adjusting auxiliary handle, 3-year warranty
Cons: Does not convert to an edger
