Black & Decker Firestorm FS14PSK

Date Published: 6/24/08

Powered by a heavy-duty, high-torque motor, the Black & Decker Firestorm FS14PSK 14.4-volt cordless drill/driver can tackle most of your hole-drilling and screw-driving needs, whether the target material is wood, metal or plastic. The two-speed gearbox with variable-speed trigger control delivers high torque when driving screws and high speed when drilling. This two-speed versatility will certainly come in handy when working on various projects.

The FS14PSK is equipped with SmartSelect Technology, so you select the application and the drill automatically chooses to the optimal power and speed. The adjustable collar allows for various drilling and screw-driving applications. For example, the setting with an image of the shortest screw provides the lowest torque, while the setting showing a 1-inch or larger spade bit delivers the highest torque. While we like SmartSelect, the FS14PSK's collar takes significant effort to move and doesn't adjust with the same ease as the adjustable torque collars on all the other models we tested.

The FS14PSK is a lightweight, well-balanced drill that proves quite comfortable to hold, even if your hands are smaller than the average adult. The double-sleeve keyless chuck requires two hands to tighten, but this isn't a serious drawback. The FS14PSK package includes a 14.4-volt extended-runtime battery and charger, one double-end screwdriver bit tip and a storage case. Not a bad deal for a 14.4-volt drill with a suggested price of $59.97. The downside is that the battery takes up to 6 hours to charge, and the case isn't as durable as others.

Despite a few failings, the Black & Decker Firestorm FS14PSK 14.4-volt cordless drill/driver is a good budget choice with just enough power for most jobs without being too heavy to handle.

Pros: High-torque motor, comfortable grip, good combination of price and features
Cons: Torque collar can be difficult to adjust, battery pack takes up to 6 hours to recharge, inexpensive clips on case, unable to store drill in case with battery pack attached, drill comes with only one battery pack
