For just 30 bucks, the Black & Decker 12-Inch Trimmer/Edger ST4000 delivers the economical one-two punch of both a string trimmer and edger. The 12-inch cutting swath clears a nice-sized path, and the 3.5-amp motor powers the line through fairly heavy grass or weeds. Once you've cut the grass down to size, you can press a button, twist the head, and flip down the metal guide to edge along the sidewalk or driveway. This unit also features an adjustable assist handle, which lets you choose a comfortable stance. The ST4000 is small enough and light enough (just 4 pounds) to make storage a breeze, and its compact design lets you trim and edge to your heart's content without too much fatigue. Unlike higher-end models, this unit utilizes the standard bump-and-feed system as opposed to the newer centrifugal line release system. It's a minor quibble, though. The ST4000 still holds up as a user-friendly, cheap, and compact combination unit.
