The Bissell ProHeat 2X Select Pet 9400-3 is a full-size carpet cleaner with a built-in heater. Unlike some of its competitors that rely primarily on heated tap water to clean carpets, the Bissell ProHeat 9400-3 uses an internal heater to raise the temperature of tap water. While it is not a true "steam cleaner," it does use heated water in the cleaning process.

As the "Select Pet" name suggests, the Bissell ProHeat 2X 9400-3 has some advantages when it comes to cleaning pet stains. One improvement that sets this unit apart is that the built-in heater even disperses heat through the hose tool. It also has more attachments than we typically find on a carpet-cleaning machine. The attachments are nested on board and include a powered carpet/stair brush, spraying crevice tool, upholstery tool and a 6-inch pet stain eraser tool. The pet stain eraser tool is a new addition to the Bissell's onboard lineup. After a bit of pre-treating of the stains, we found the pet stain eraser tool did have an advantage over ordinary hand tool attachments. It cleans quite well, but it also makes it convenient to use this large carpet cleaner for small, more frequent cleaning tasks.

The 12-inch cleaning path is average, but we do like the 12 rows of rotating bristles that comprise the main brush head. These bristles work pet hair loose (one should still vacuum thoroughly before using this machine), as well as dirt and other debris. We like the view-through nozzle because it is easy to see, at a glance, when it needs to be cleaned. Why is this important? It will need to be removed, probably with each use, to clear loose carpet fibers and other debris from the nozzle. Otherwise, the Bissell will lose some of its suction power. Although the suction power seems adequate, particularly for a machine powered by a 12-amp motor, it wasn't quite what we expected. It left carpets damper than we prefer, and the carpets took longer to dry than we would have liked.

Although we recommend the Bissell ProHeat 2X Select Pet 9400-3 for its cleaning ability and multiple onboard tools, it doesn't have everything we're looking for in a carpet cleaner. For about the same price as this unit, Bissell offers a model with antimicrobial qualities that cleans bare floors as well as carpets.
