Bissell PowerSteamer PowerBrush 1694

Date Published: 5/6/08

The Bissell PowerSteamer PowerBrush 1694 is a feature-rich machine with plenty of power. We used the PowerSteamer on several types of carpet, and it performed well -- whether the carpet was an expensive friese or a durable low-loop pile.

The Bissell PowerSteamer has several rotating brushes under the main vacuum head. We found it necessary to occasionally clear the hood of loose carpet fibers, but this is fairly typical for most vacuum extractors. The PowerSteamer has a two tank system; one tank holds the clean water and the other holds the dirty water. The tanks are really convenient to use, and they clip out and in with ease. A measuring cup is included for adding the cleaning formula to the tank. It also has a thoughtful feature we really like: The cleaning solution can be used alone to pre-treat carpets. The PowerSteamer's brush works the cleaning solution into the stain before the machine goes over it to remove the soil.

While we were very pleased with the Bissell PowerSteamer's overall performance on most carpets, there is one sticking point. When it comes to set-in stains on highly soiled high-traffic areas, it didn't remove stains completely unless we spent time pre-treating the areas. And don't expect the PowerSteamer to store compactly. You'll need a dedicated space for this machine. Despite its size, this vacuum is lightweight and easy to maneuver. It has a wide cleaning path, yet can reach into most places. And, what it can't reach, the upholstery attachment can tackle.

The bottom line? Although the Bissell PowerSteamer PowerBrush looks like a heavyweight steam vacuum, it's suitable for much lighter use. If you need a steam vacuum to do some light cleaning and refresh carpets, it's a safe bet. If, however, you need to power out some tough dirt or stains on high-traffic areas, the Bissell PowerSteamer Upright Vacuum probably isn't the right choice unless you're willing to spend the time and effort on pre-treating these areas.

Pros: Two tank system, pre-treater
Cons: Not up to par on high traffic areas
