Bissell Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum 5770

The Bissell Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum 5770 pairs powerful suction with allergy-friendly appeal. It has a HEPA filter system to trap dust mites, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, ragweed and other irritants, which are then sealed in an antimicrobial lined collection canister. The antimicrobial liner fights the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew. The Bissell takes this allergy-fighting power one step further: a spray to kill dust mites is included with the vacuum. The water-based, fragrance-free spray is meant for upholstery, pillows and mattresses.
As we test a vacuum, we always monitor suction. Does the vacuum pick up large particles? Can it eliminate pet hairs? The answers, in this case, are "yes" and "yes." The Bissell Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum is powerful, even on thick pile rugs. In fact, its suction is so powerful that we found it even lifted lightweight area rugs. While this isn't really a benefit, it's certainly a testament to the Healthy Home's dirt-sucking capability. And, with a low front-end (equipped with an always-on headlight), the vacuum easily suctions under cabinets.
We like the ability to turn off the brush on the main vacuum head. This is important, because this eliminates the possibility of creating needless friction when using attachments that keep the vacuum stationary. This feature also is useful when vacuuming area rugs with fringe. The TurboBrush attachment works well at picking up pet hairs from carpet and upholstery, and is useful for stairs. In addition, there is an onboard tool for vacuuming in crevices, as well as a telescoping extension wand.
The Bissell Healthy Home has a bare floor setting that works well. When used on bare floors, it seems to pick up particles without blowing them around. Plus, the wheels are softer than the hard plastic ones found on most models and we didn't worry about damaging wood floors as we rolled the vacuum.
Our one complaint centers on the collection canister. The canister can be difficult to remove, and definitely requires two hands to do so. The "door" at the bottom of the canister isn't spring-loaded, so it can be difficult to open and sometimes requires two hands to pry it open. To keep the suction working at peak performance, it's necessary to empty the canister more often than we expected -- often before it reaches capacity.
Pros: Powerful suction, can be used on multiple surfaces
Cons: Collection canister difficult to empty
