Bernina 1150MDA serger

Date Published: 4/30/07

You can't go wrong with any of the Bernina sergers, but the convenience of working with the 1150MDA makes it our favorite.

Seamstresses will typically start using a machine like this for stitching and finishing. Often the next technique attempted is a rolled hem. Most entry-level sergers require fairly time consuming and complex adjustments of the plate, knife and/or feet to go from serging to a rolled hem. Upgrade to the more expensive Bernina 1150MDA and eliminate much of the learning curve and most of these adjustments. With this model you'll be moving effortlessly to a rolled hem and back again. There are no switch plates or presser feet to change. Going from serging to a rolled hem is incredibly easy and convenient. Just move the lever to the hemming position and you're off and running. In addition to sewing and finishing, you'll be edge hemming projects such as napkins, tablecloths and scarves in no time.

Spending more on the 1150MDA also lands you a far more convenient threading system. If you're new to serging, you'll be able to get started more quickly than on the less expensive yet more complicated models. And if you're not new to the technique, you'll immediately see the benefit of lay-in threading and an automated lower looper threader. The Bernina 1150MDA eliminates much of the wrist twisting and tweezer brandishing you're probably become very familiar with.

In addition to these upgrades, more advanced seamstresses will appreciate the precise control the mtc (micro thread control) feature that the 1150MDA offers. This feature allows setting of the length of the over-edge thread. Just a twist of a knob and loose, loopy over-edge threads are quickly eliminated. Like all better quality sergers, this model includes a differential feed setting. Differential feed allows you to adjust the feed so various thicknesses of fabrics sew smoothly. An additional use of differential feed is for intentional puckering and gathering.

We also like the foot design on this Bernina machine. The swing-out feature makes it easy to change a needle or get in close for threading. Bulky and unusual fabrics are also easier to position thanks to the front lift offered on the foot.

Certainly a machine for those who take sewing seriously, the Bernina 1150MDA requires a substantial investment. The return on the investment, however, is unusual speed, convenience and the ultimate in sewing pleasure.

Pros: Machine with lots of performance features for those who demand the best
Con: An expensive model for those with only a moderate interest in serging
