BenQ FP91V+ 19-inch LCD monitor

Date Published: 10/2/07

One look at the specs for BenQ's FP91V+ 19-inch LCD monitor and you'll know it was designed with gamers and movie fans in mind. It features an impressive 12-millisecond pixel response rate that comes close to eliminating ghosting when viewing video or blasting bad guys. It also includes a pair of 2-watt speakers that are surprisingly good for built-ins, although they're better at sound effects than music.

That's the good news. The bad news is that adjustment options are very limited. You can't raise or lower the display, swivel it, or switch between landscape and portrait modes. The FP91V+ is VESA-compatible, though, so if you don't mind spending a little extra, you can gain some adjustability (and desktop space) by adding an arm or wall mount.

A native resolution of 1,280X1,024 provides fairly crisp text, even at small font sizes, as well as good detail in images. The display supports up to 16.2 million colors, and these colors are bright and vivid with good contrast. The 140-degree vertical and horizontal viewing angles are somewhat constricting, with noticeable blurriness and color shift when viewing the display off-axis.

The FP91V+ has an ultra-glossy coating that helps text and images look their best, but it can be a little hard on the eyes. If you use the display in an office environment, you may find yourself distracted by reflections of passing coworkers. Even in a home environment, reflections of surrounding objects, overhead or desk lights, or wandering pets can be an annoyance.

In addition to the limited adjustment options, the FP91V+ is also a little short on extras. There are no USB inputs, so you can't use the display as a USB hub for scanners, digital cameras, and other peripherals. The package includes a Quick Start Guide, all cables, and a CD with drivers and an electronic user guide.

Despite its shortcomings, the FP91V+ is a good choice for individuals who are looking for its specific features and options, and who don't mind giving up a little to get them.

Pros: Good text, image, and color quality. Fast pixel response time. Speakers are above-average for built-ins, although they're not a good choice for music. Analog and digital inputs.
Cons: Limited adjustment options. No USB inputs. Ultra-glossy coating can be a little hard on the eyes, particularly for extended work (or gaming) sessions.
