BenQ FP783 LCD monitor

Date Published: 10/2/07

Image quality is always one of the top priorities when choosing a display, and the BenQ FP783 certainly turns in some excellent video and gaming performance.

Images on this LCD monitor are bright (sometimes too bright), and the 500:1 contrast ratio delivers good contrast in most cases. Color quality is also generally above average, although not quite good enough for high-end graphics or photography work. The FP783 has a four-leg base that takes up more desktop space than usual, but in return, it offers greater stability.

The FP783 is lightweight and easy to set up. It includes D-sub (analog) and DVI-D (digital) inputs, as well as a generous three USB ports. One USB port is located on the top of the display, which is handy for use with a webcam. The other two USB ports, located on the lower back edge of the monitor, are convenient places to plug in a digital camera, speakers, a joystick, or an iPod shuffle. Six display control keys (Power, Enter, Up, Down, Exit, and iKey) are present in a wavy strip on the side of the bezel.

The FP783 doesn't offer much in the way of flexibility, unless you count the fact that it can tilt 90 degrees backward. BenQ touts this feature as making the display easier to carry and store, but how often does the average user carry a monitor around or stow it away? You can tilt the display 25 degrees forward, but you can't swivel it, adjust the height, or switch from landscape to portrait mode. The FP783 also doesn't support a VESA mount, so if you were planning on mounting it on the wall, you're out of luck.

The FP783 package includes a Quick Start Guide, drivers, and electronic user guide, digital and analog signal cables, and a power cable.

The listed MSRP of $439 is actually an approximate retail price, as BenQ did not provide an MSRP for the FP783.

The BenQ FP783 really shines on the performance end. Its 12-millisecond response time makes it one of the fastest displays around, and it is an excellent choice for viewing (but not creating or editing) video and playing 3-D games. It has a 13X11-inch viewing area, which is about average for a 17-inch LCD, a native resolution of 1,280X1,024, and a 75Hz refresh rate.

Pros: Lightning-fast response time makes this display an excellent choice for gaming and viewing video
Cons: Color fidelity falls a bit short for graphics work, no height adjustment or swivel options
