BenQ FP2091 LCD monitor
Date Published: 10/2/07
The BenQ FP2091 is an attractive package, from top to bottom. At just under 20 pounds, the display is lightweight and easy to set up or move. The base is topped by a curved swash that takes up more desktop space than usual, but it serves to add style and stability. There are no controls on the front of the display to mar its brushed metal surface. Instead, the controls are located in a row on the left side of the monitor. This is a bit awkward until you get to know their configuration, because when you reach for them, you can't see their labels.
The thin bezel makes the 20-1/10-inch viewable area look even larger than it is. The FP2091 has a native resolution of 1,600X1,200, as well as a 400:1 contrast ratio. The 16-millisecond pixel response time is fast enough to reduce blurring and ghosting when viewing video or playing 3-D games, and the relatively generous 176-degree viewing angle helps reduce image blurring when viewing the display from off center. Image quality, sharpness, and color fidelity are good, although not quite good enough for high-end graphics work.
Flexibility is the FP2091's strong suit. It can tilt 5 degrees forward or 25 degrees backward, which is fairly standard for LCD displays. You can swivel it from side to side, adjust its height, and pivot it between landscape and portrait modes with the included PivotPro software. The four built-in USB ports help the FP2091 serve as a USB hub. You can use the ports to connect a variety of USB devices, including digital cameras, joysticks, speakers, webcams, or iPods.
Other features include S-video and composite connections, as well as support for picture-in-picture. There are no built-in speakers, but you can easily add your own using the built-in audio port. The package includes a Quick Start guide, signal cable, power cable, and CD with drivers and an electronic user guide.
The BenQ FP2091 is VESA-compatible, so you can mount it on the wall or a swing arm if space is an issue or you want additional adjustment options.
Pro: Stylish package. Good image quality. Multiple adjustment options. Multiple video inputs and USB ports offer a number of connectivity options.
Con: Somewhat pricey. Image quality is a bit disappointing for the price. Good enough for general-purpose use but won't satisfy graphics professionals.
