Back to Basics Coffee Solution CC500

Date Published: 1/25/07

The Back to Basics Coffee Solution CC500 is a versatile auto-drip coffee maker, combined with a dispensing station. This machine offers two serving options -- the traditional carafe as well as a one-cup dispensing option.

This unit consists of a 15.75-inch-tall base with internal water reservoir, removable filter basket, a permanent mesh filter and 12-cup glass carafe. The base has a flip-back lid, which opens to provide access to the water reservoir and filter basket.

The carafe sits on a raised warming plate. There is a dispensing area below the carafe. Coffee can be automatically dispensed by pressing a cup or mug against the bar. The specially designed carafe actually has a built-in release, which is activated when the bar is pressed so you can literally serve the entire contents without ever lifting the pot.

The dispensing area is about 5 inches tall and can accommodate any standard size cup or mug. Taller mugs and pitchers must be inserted on an angle. Of course, you can always lift and pour directly from the carafe as well. This option is handy when filling an insulated carafe or jug, for instance.

The Back to Basics Coffee Solution also features a convenient programmable clock/timer, which enables you to preset the start of brewing. Other features include a cascading shower-type brew head for better coffee saturation, delay-brew function so you can sneak a cup of coffee during brewing, convenient internal cord storage, and a removable drip tray below the dispensing bar.

Our testers agreed that the machine was quite easy to use. The only inconvenience we noted was in pouring the water from the carafe into the internal reservoir since the angle for pouring is a bit awkward and some spilling can occur if you try to pour too quickly.

Brewing is as simple as pressing one button to start the machine immediately or just a few extra touches to set up the programmable clock. If a second pot is desired, you need to wait about 10 minutes for the machine to cool down first.

Pros: Two serving options: carafe or dispensing bar, programmable clock/timer
Cons: Pouring water into tank can be awkward
