AV123 x-ls Bookshelf Speakers
Date Published: 5/12/08
AV123 recently introduced its x-series of loudspeakers, and we auditioned a pair of the x-ls bookshelf models. Founded in January of 2000, AV123 sells critically acclaimed speakers, cables and electronics directly to consumers. With the x-ls, it is easy to see how the company earned its solid reputation.
The first thing that jumped out at us was the price. At $219 for the pair, the x-ls speakers are some of the most affordable bookshelf models we have reviewed. When they arrived, we were immediately impressed with the attention to packaging. They ship double-boxed, and each speaker comes covered in a white cotton "sock" to protect the exterior.
The x-ls is a two-way, vented, rear-firing bookshelf speaker. Constructed from MDF, each speaker is covered with a very high-quality veneer. Our review samples were clothed in a furniture-grade white shadow maple finish that at first glance appeared to be hardwood. They are also offered in a satin black finish. Weighing in at a hefty 17 pounds each, these speakers exhibit a top-notch fit and finish.
Each x-ls cabinet houses a 6-1/2-inch curvilinear-shaped, treated paper long-throw woofer with a polymer chassis, as well as a 1-inch treated fabric dome tweeter. The very solid and sturdy wooden grills have a curvy, unusual shape that will delight some and turn off others. Rubber feet are included for "decoupling" the speakers from the floor (or shelf), and AV123 also offers optional "LaunchPad" mounting plates ($20 per pair) for mounting the speakers on a wall.
We do not recommend positioning these speakers in an enclosed shelf or entertainment center, and this will result in poor bass performance. During our testing, we listened to the speakers on 23-inch stands and kept them at least 12 inches away from the rear wall of our listening room. If you plan to place them on an open shelf, you should leave at least 3 inches of space behind them so as to not obstruct the rear port.
The sound quality of our x-ls pair rivaled that of speakers costing over twice as much. They exhibited a wide soundstage regardless of the style of music, with excellent imaging. Only at extreme volume levels did the bass become a tad bit loose and boomy. Overall, the x-ls speakers displayed excellent tonal qualities that we found enjoyable for rock, jazz, pop and country music.
The x-ls speakers are an incredible value. To call them "budget" speakers seems unfair considering the excellent sonic qualities, but at $219 per pair, they are indeed a steal. They would also be a great start to a matched surround system when combined with the rest of the affordable x-series. We highly recommend the AV123 x-ls bookshelf speakers, and without hesitation award them our Best Buy rating.
Pros: Unbeatable performance for the price, solid construction, furniture-grade finish
Cons: Unusual grills may not appeal to some, poor bass response when positioned in an enclosed shelf or entertainment cabinet
