The Austin Air HealthMate HM-400 air purifier lets us check-off nearly all the items on our "want" list. It is powerful and can clear rooms up to 1,500 square feet. It has a HEPA filtration system to remove more than 99 percent of airborne pollutants larger than 0.3 microns. It also has filters to remove odors and harmful gasses. Plus, the Austin Air HealthMate HM-400 is backed by one of the best air purifier warranties we've seen -- a full 5-year warranty that covers mechanical systems and filter systems.

The filtration system is comprised of four parts, including two pre-filters, true HEPA filter and a carbon filter. It has all-steel construction for durability. Because this air purifier weighs in at a hefty 45 pounds, we were pleased to discover it has easy-rolling casters. The real question, however, is how well does the HealthMate HM-400 really perform? Like a champ. It easily removed allergens and odors from multiple rooms. In fact, its ability to clear spaces up to 1,500 square feet is one of its distinct advantages.

The Austin Air HealthMate HM-400 has three speed settings. We found it operates efficiently on any of the settings, but we suggest using the higher settings to clear a room quickly. We estimated the air purifier cleared the air in a relatively large bedroom in less than 20 minutes. We were also pleased to discover each of the settings operates quietly. If you're tired of air purifiers that sound like a jet engine, you'll appreciate this Austin Air model.

The one drawback to the HealthMate HM-400 is aesthetics. It is bulky and lacks a stylish appeal. It does, however, come in four different finishes: white, black, sandstone or silver. That said, we love the Austin Air HealthMate HM0-400 for its cleaning power and efficient performance. The impressive warranty isn't bad, either.
