Austin Air HealthMate HM-200 Jr. Air Purifier
Date Published: 5/1/07
If you're in the market for an air purifier, but don't want one the size of a Hummer parked in your living room, the Austin Air HealthMate HM-200 +Jr. HEPA air purifier is the way to go.
It is a mini version of the full-sized HM-400, yet it offers many of the same features. It has all-steel construction, three operating speeds and a filter system we love. The Austin Air HealthMate HM-200 Junior has a four-filter system: a pre-filter to remove large pollutants, a filter with 6.5 pounds of activated carbon, and a HEPA filter. This translates into a long-lasting, effective filtering system that doesn't require frequent replacement. We find it does a good job at cleaning the air, and doesn't require a lot of maintenance (We didn't find it necessary to move the unit around or clean the air inlets.)
The Austin Air HealthMate HM-200 Junior does not have casters, but it weighs just 18 pounds, so casters are not really necessary. Despite its small size, the Austin Air HealthMate HM-200 can clear rooms up to 700 square feet, an impressive accomplishment for a diminutive air purifier. It's a good choice for those who have allergies, or who live or work in places where odors are an issue.
Although the Austin Air HealthMate HM-200 Junior can ease symptoms for those with chemical sensitivities, those with severe symptoms may want to spring for a specialized filter. This model has the option of using a filter with potassium iodide -- in addition to activated carbon. This filter is an additional purchase, but can help those who have chemical sensitivity.
Although the Austin Air HealthMate HM-200 Junior doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, it's a hard worker and doesn't cost a fortune to purchase or operate.
Pros: Three filter system, reasonable price; small size
Cons: No casters
