The Audiovox D1210 is a portable DVD player that does so much more than just play DVD. Like the similar Audiovox D1020, this is a flat-screen, tablet-style player with a top-loading DVD tray.

While the D1210's large screen provides sharp, clean images, it is the unit's audio reproduction that is really impressive. The D1210 lacks the FM modulator of the D1020 that enables you to broadcast the audio from the DVD player over the car's speakers. However, the unit features a pair of detachable stereo speakers that provide excellent 3-D virtual surround sound (for a small portable unit, that is). The D1210 also includes a wireless headphone transmitter and two sets of wireless headphones, so there are no messy wires to deal with in the car. If you prefer to use your own headphones, Audiovox includes two wired headphone jacks.

The D1210 also comes with a number of handy accessories, including a car mounting kit. This enables the player to be installed between the two front headrests or on the back of a headrest so that kids sitting in the back can comfortably view the screen. The mounting is quick and easy to set up and disassemble, yet it remains stable once installed.

The D1210's TV tuner means you can connect the unit to either a cable source or external antenna. The monitor features a foldout stand to sit the player upright like a picture frame on a table or nightstand for viewing at home or in a hotel room.

The unit is powered by either an AC adapter or a car's power outlet. Unfortunately, there is no battery pack with the D1210, so it is not suitable for use on a plane or anywhere else that doesn't offer a convenient power source. The included remote control is compact yet comfortable to use, and the D1210 also comes with a carrying case.

The Audiovox D1210 can handle DVD-Video and audio from CD and home-formatted CD-R/RW, but the D1210 is centered on its enormous 12-inch screen that can double as a portable television.
