AT&T CallVantage

Date Published: 10/29/07

AT&T CallVantage is a hardware-based Voice over Internet Protocol service that is surprisingly easy to set up and configure, which is a boon for do-it-yourselfers who don't like to pay installation fees. Another plus is that CallVantage doesn't require the use of any other AT&T Internet service; it's compatible with most DSL, cable and other high-speed Internet service providers.

The heart of CallVantage is a TA (telephone adapter) that AT&T provides. The TA is inserted between your cable, DSL or fiber modem and your network router or computer. On the back of the TA is a connection port for your home telephone line. You can plug one or more standard phones into the telephone port, or you can plug the telephone port into your home's existing telephone wiring system. The package includes a handy do-it-yourself wiring guide, with tips that make the connection process an easy one. AT&T CallVantage works with most corded and wireless phones, and in many cases, you can use your existing home phone number.

The voice mail system allows callers to leave messages that will be forwarded to your e-mail account as audio files; you can also check your messages from any phone.

There are two call forwarding options. The "Locate Me" option forwards calls to up to five different numbers. The "Safe Forward Number" option automatically sends calls to a different number if CallVantage detects a power outage or other problem with your ISP service; you can use this feature to route calls to your cell number so you always have emergency contact capabilities. Other features include caller logs, speed dial and do not disturb.

AT&T CallVantage's monthly fee includes unlimited local and long distance calls in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. For a small fee, you can add premium features, including additional lines and multiple phone numbers with different area codes, which is a convenient way to allow friends and family in other area codes call you without paying long distance charges.

Pros: Easy to install and use, includes advanced voice mail and call forwarding features, compatible with corded and wireless phones
Cons: Premium features can nickel-and-dime you to higher monthly fees, no call filtering option
