ASUS MyPal A636N PDA with GPS
Date Published: 5/7/08
For a PDA that's got it all, look no further than the ASUS MyPal A636N. This personal digital assistant features a built-in GPS receiver, Wi-Fi and more, but it's priced as high as you might expect.
The A636N's GPS capabilities are seamlessly integrated into the handheld, which includes a swivel antenna that collapses neatly onto the back of the unit when not in use. You can view maps either horizontally or vertically on the 3-1/2-inch LCD screen, so choose the format you prefer. The A636N also offers voice directions via the loud and crisp front speaker, letting you keep your eyes on the road. A CD-ROM with maps of all of North America is included in the package.
ASUS includes some handy GPS peripherals with the A636N, including a windshield mount and a car charger so you can keep it powered up while driving. The battery provides a healthy nine hours of life during normal usage, so it's good away from the charger as well.
With a 416MHz XScale processor with 128MB of Flash ROM and 64MB of SDRAM, the A636N is a competent performer for traditional Pocket PC tasks. It ships with mobile versions of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook, so you can take your files and contacts wherever you go.
The A636N features integrated Wi-Fi, so you're able to browse the internet on the go. It ships with a mobile version of Internet Explorer and can hop onto any 802.11b or 802.11g hotspot you come across. The A636N also has Bluetooth built in, letting you synch your data wirelessly with a compatible PC. In addition, you can cordlessly connect with Bluetooth peripherals such as a printer.
The PDA's layout is similar to most other Pocket PCs, although the large speaker takes up the lower left-hand side of the handheld. Next to the speaker are two round control buttons with quick links to commonly used applications and controls.
This isn't the lightest of PDAs, and with a retail price of $600, it's not the least expensive, either. However, if you're looking for a PDA that does it all, the ASUS MyPal A636N offers excellent GPS features, wireless access and Bluetooth connectivity.
