Asko D3531XLHDSS stainless steel built-in dishwasher

The Asko D3531XLHDSS stainless steel built-in dishwasher is pricey but good-looking. It has a single stainless steel handle across the front and hidden controls for a clean look. The digital controls feature an LCD display. This display shows the name of each of the dishwasher's 10 cycles, as well as special options, time remaining and temperatures. The controls automatically remember the last programmed cycle and can be set to one of several languages. We're a bit more ambivalent about the Asko's end-of-cycle tone that sounds when a cycle is complete. Although the tone does come with a volume control, we don't think it's necessary.
The Asko D3531XLHDSS dishwasher's interior has a top and bottom rack. Not all of the tines fold flat, which is a disappointment at this price point, but they are double-coated and cushioned. We also would prefer an adjustable or removable top rack for handling larger platters, pitchers or baking sheets. The interior does have a durable continuous galvanized steel pan, and the unit is operated by dual motors and dual pumps, which is something we'd expect when paying about $1,700 for a dishwasher. A built-in disposal helps eliminate the need for hand rinsing.
There are nine wash temperatures, and the hottest one goes up to about 170 degrees Fahrenheit to sanitize the dishwasher's contents. One of the water-saving options is the ability to choose either rack -- top-only or bottom-only -- for a full wash cycle. We also like the placement of the Asko's water jets. There are jets aimed upward to get inside pots and pans, as well as jets aimed downward. This model has a thermal-drying function, and this heated dryer has three duration options; the longer, extra-dry option actually results in dishware and glassware that doesn't need towel drying.
The Asko D3531XLHDSS can handle about 12 place settings. There are many things we like about the Asko, particularly its clean lines and durable construction. However, there are far less expensive models that offer nearly similar options and performance. One Whirlpool model in particular has many of the same features, plus adjustable racks, for about a fourth of the cost. We'd recommend this Asko model if budget isn't a concern, and if the look of hidden controls and the convenience of additional wash cycles are at the top of your list.
