Ariens Zoom 1840 Model 915087
Date Published: 3/16/07
The Ariens Zoom 1840 (Model 915087) is a solid, well-designed, relatively comfortable zero-turning riding mower. For lawns up to about two acres, it's a good choice.
Ariens doesn't have the extensive model family offered by other manufacturers, but we found that the ones they do offer are good-quality machines, and the Zoom 1840 is a good example. With an 18-hp Kohler Courage engine and a hydrostatic (automatic) transmission, it can quickly mow a lawn much faster than push-type or even lawn tractor mowers. Forward speed is up to 7 mph and reverse is 3 mph, which is plenty fast.
The Kohler Courage is a single-cylinder four-stroke engine with design features to keep it running longer than less expensive models. For example, twin cams make for smoother overhead valve (OHV) operation. If you spend about three grand on a mower, you want it to last longer than a few seasons. The Kohler Courage engine is available in other brands of zero-turn riders as well.
In fact, most of the features on the Zoom 1840 are found on other ZTRs; this and other Ariens models just seem to have a little better quality. Take, for example, the driver's seat. Most riding mowers have a basic, short-back seat that can get a little uncomfortable after awhile. This Ariens has a full-padded mid-back seat with armrests and a nearby cup holder.
Back to the reason you're riding this mower: The cut is 40 inches wide. That's not as wide as some consumer mowers, but ample for most lawns up to about two acres. The mower blades are engaged and disengaged with an easy-to-reach PTO switch. There are two hydrostatic transmissions, one for each of the rear wheels, to more easily control maneuverability.
The frame is made of tubular steel and the deck is steel; all of it is powder-coated to minimize corrosion. The two turn controls have padded grips. With twin 3.25-gallon fuel tanks, you'll probably have enough to mow your lawn without having to refill on gas. Both front and rear tires are a little larger than most other consumer ZTRs, so tracking and traction are easier.
Overall, the Ariens Zoom 1840 is a solid zero-turn rider with features that will appeal to consumers who want a quality mower that will cut for many years.
