Apple Computer 17-inch Apple Studio Display
Date Published: 6/17/08
The 17-inch Apple Studio Display is simply stunning, both in design and display. It outperforms many of its competitors at a very competitive price. If it's true that you get what you pay for, you'd better grab this display before Apple realizes the error of its ways and raises the price.
The Apple Studio Display does have an image problem; not the monitor itself, but its name. Apple originally gave the same name to a line of CRT-based monitors. After later deciding to sell only LCD-based displays, Apple kept the same name. If you do any pricing research, be sure you're comparing LCD to LCD and not one of the older CRT displays.
The Studio Display shares its overall design with its bigger brother, the Apple Cinema Display. Both displays use a stand that looks and functions like an easel. The case is a clear plastic, matching the design of Apple's computer systems. The easel allows adjustment of the viewing tilt angle, but not its height. The display is so well designed, you'll probably find it's just the right height for your desktop, but if you need more height, you can place it on top of another object. The viewing angle is a generous 160 degrees, and native display resolution is 1280x1024.
Connecting the Studio Display to your computer is as easy as it gets. To make the connection as simple as possible, Apple introduced a new system called ADC (Apple Display Connector). ADC combines the video signal, power, and USB into a single connector: Plug and Play at its best. If you're a PC user, or if you have an older Mac, adapters are available from third parties.
The Studio Display has the brightest, sharpest panel we've ever seen. The colors are stunning, and should convince graphics professionals concerned about color space to consider an LCD display. Text is clear, sharp, and easy to read.
The Studio Display is a winner, at an attractive price. All it needs to reach perfection is a second VGA connection port for legacy Mac and PC users.
Pro: Bright, sharp display with gorgeous colors and a native resolution that compares to a 21-inch CRT monitor. Con: A non-standard connector prevents legacy Macintosh and PC users from easily using this monitor.
