Apple AirPort Express

Date Published: 3/14/06

Everyone is familiar with the usual tangle of wires that accompany a computer. Throw in audio connections and you can wind up with an even more mind-boggling mess. The Apple AirPort Express is a simple, low-cost way to unhook the wires and go wireless instead.

The AirPort Express is a small module (in a spiffy white color, of course) that provides IEEE 802.11g Wi-Fi connectivity up to 54Mbps. That's pretty fast. For example, you could give internet access to up to ten computers (Mac or PC) at once. Of course, each computer would require a Wi-Fi connection of its own, so it can talk to the AirPort Express. The AirPort Express can also act like a wireless bridge, extending the range of an existing Wi-Fi system by acting as an intermediary.

There are all kinds of applications available for the AirPort Express. For example, you can play an iTunes music library throughout the house, share a single broadband Internet connection, or share a USB printer. The music application uses the AirTunes program. Simply connect any sound playback system or powered speakers to the audio port on the AirPort Express, and then control the stream of music from your computer (or laptop) to the sound system. You can use multiple AirPort Express modules to connect to multiple sound systems.

Each module contains a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet port, a USB port, and a 3.5mm mini-audio jack. Of course, the communications can be encrypted for security. Apple's AirPort Express is a remarkable, low-cost way to add Wi-Fi connectivity throughout a home or other space, letting you give all your wires to someone who isn't smart enough to buy one.
