Our review sample arrived in a beautiful Medium Cherry finish (it is also available in high gloss black) that was stunning. The veneer was very high quality, and will blend very well in many rooms. The front-firing 12-inch woofer has a removable black cloth grill that is very sturdy and was easy to remove, if you prefer to keep the massive black driver underneath on display. The cabinet has four square feet that share the Medium Cherry finish and kept the sub in place, even during powerful rumblings.

Throughout our listening tests, we were impressed with the smoothness of the subwoofer, which blended perfectly with the other speakers without sounding muddy or overwhelming in its bass response. The S-12 was especially pleasing with music, which is often not the case with large powered subs. We tested it with a matching set of speakers from Aperion's Intimus line and had excellent results, but there is little doubt that this subwoofer will work well with other brands of speakers.

During action films, the S-12 created a sonic punch that you could feel in your chest, and that rattled pictures hanging on the walls in adjoining rooms. The warmth it added to orchestral film scores was breathtaking, and reminded us of how critical a subwoofer is to the home theater experience.
