AlphaGrip AG-5 handheld keyboard and trackball
Date Published: 6/6/06
AlphaGrip's AG-5 handheld keyboard aims to revolutionize input devices. While there certainly is an extremely steep learning curve, this unique keyboard and trackball may find a place with those users who want to input text and other data without sitting behind a desk.
At first glance, the AG-5 looks more like a large gamepad than a keyboard. However, as you give it the once- and then the twice-over, you'll find that it contains all the keys from a standard QWERTY keyboard. You control the front keys with your thumbs and the back ones with your fingers. The most often-used keys have been placed at the ready position for individual fingers on eight buttons that are essentially two-way D-pads.
It requires some serious practice before you can type reliably with the AG-5. AlphaGrip says that it takes from 30 to 60 hours of use before reaching a typing speed of 50 words per minute, and the manufacturer includes some helpful stickers to show you the backside key placement. This way, you won't need to keep flipping the input device around in mid-word as you learn.
The AG-5 is comfortable to use, and it works great as a gaming controller since you have access to all the keys on a traditional keyboard right at your fingertips. The 9-foot USB cable means you can get a respectable distance away from your system when typing text messages or gaming, although wireless connectivity would be nice.
The AG-5 also includes a trackball, which is placed within easy reach of your thumb. The sensitivity is a bit low, even when we had the Windows' settings maximized, and there's no scroll wheel for web browsing.
Installing this USB device is plug-and-play easy, as there are no drivers required for most operating systems. AlphaGrip includes a basic plastic desk stand, and a pause button allows you to disable the AG-5 to avoid accidental input.
The AG-5 retails for $99, which is on the pricey side even for a device that combines both trackball and keyboard capabilities. In addition, AlphaGrip only provides a 90-day warranty.
The AlphaGrip AG-5 isn't for everyone, but if you need a handheld input device and you're willing to put in the time to learn, it can be a useful replacement for a traditional desktop-bound mouse/trackball and keyboard.
Pro: Essentially a full keyboard in your hands, with a trackball
Con: Steep learning curve, short warranty
