Adesso CyberTablet 12000

Date Published: 12/14/06

The Adesso CyberTablet 12000 graphics tablet features a lightweight, comfortable design and a 9X12-inch active drawing area. The tablet's overall size may be a little too large to use comfortably in your lap, but the generous drawing area more than makes up for it.

Setting up the CyberTablet is easy. The tablet plugs into an available USB port (cable included), and the drivers and software are easy to install. The tablet is powered by the USB connection, so there's no power brick to find space for and no power cord to plug in or get in the way.

The wireless drawing pen uses one AAA battery (included) and offers 512 levels of pressure sensitivity, so it feels similar to using traditional drawing and painting tools. Unfortunately, it doesn't have an erase function. The wireless mouse has three buttons and a scroll wheel that can be programmed to function as another button. The mouse runs on two AA batteries (also included) and is equally comfortable for right- and left-handed users. Keep in mind that these accessories all run on regular batteries, not rechargeables, so you will need to replace them after a while.

The tablet supports resolutions of up to 3,048 lines per inch, producing some accurate output. It also includes a photo frame that you can use for tracing images, as well as 16 customizable buttons that will perform the functions of your choice.

The CyberTablet package includes Ulead PhotoImpact XL, a basic image-editing program that features a number of tools and special effects for jazzing up your favorite photos. It also has Pen Soft Pro to convert handwriting into searchable text, Office Ink to create digital signatures in almost any application, Power Presenter RE II that can turn your display into a whiteboard and Free Notes to create virtual sticky notes to place on your digital desktop.

With a generous software bundle, accurate output and a pleasantly large active drawing area, the Adesso CyberTablet 12000 is a fine graphics tablet at a good price.

Pros: Ergonomic design is comfortable to use even for long sessions, generous active drawing area, impressive software bundle, works with almost any application that accepts input from a mouse, inexpensive for its size
Cons: Does not use rechargeable batteries, some of the bundled software only works in Windows, pen doesn't have an eraser
