Actiontec USB-Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities

Date Published: 9/14/06

When you sign up for DSL broadband internet access, your internet service provider (ISP) will likely offer you a modem to buy or rent. However, ISPs often have a list of other modems they support, so it may be wise to purchase one of your own. One good choice is Actiontec's USB-Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities.

It should be noted that not very many ISPs rent modems, and you should check the cost very carefully if yours does. You'll usually have to sign at least a 1-year contract, which can make renting a modem much more expensive than buying one. Purchasing your own broadband modem lets you check prices to ensure your provider isn't overcharging you, and it also allows you to find a modem with the features you need.

Actiontec's USB-Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities isn't quite as impressive as its moniker would imply, but it's a competent high-speed DSL modem with an integrated firewall that allows you to connect more than one computer over a single broadband connection.

This model doesn't have a built-in wired or wireless hub as with some of Actiontec's other modems, but since the modem offers both USB and Ethernet connections for your PC, you can actually hook up two PCs by using both of these connections. You need to have the PCs within close proximity to one another (or string an Ethernet cable across your home), but it's a quick and easy way to get a second system online. You can also connect a network hub to the modem's Ethernet port and then have four or more additional computers go online through one broadband connection.

Actiontec includes a handy installation poster that walks you through the process of connecting more than one PC. Their software wizards are helpful with the installation as well.

Actiontec lists this modem at $70, but we were able to find it for under $50, which is a good price if you are considering buying your own DSL modem. If you don't want to just go with the modem that your ISP is dangling in front of you, Actiontec's USB-Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities is a fairly useful alternative.

Pros:  Can hook up two PCs (or more) to one connection
Cons:  No wireless routing capability

Warranty
1 year, limited
