2nd Story Software TaxACT Ultimate Bundle 2007
Date Published: 2/25/08
2nd Story Software's TaxACT Ultimate Bundle 2007 provides just about everything many taxpayers need to successfully file both federal and state tax returns.
TaxACT uses a question-and-answer format to complete the necessary forms and schedules, although at any time you can switch to "form view" in order to view and edit tax information directly. At each step of the interview process, TaxACT provides explanations for each question, along with links to J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax Guide, a best-selling tax guide.
TaxACT isn't limited to standard individual or joint-filing forms; it includes a wide range of federal and state forms and schedules that allow you to include other income sources -- such as small businesses and farms -- with your tax filing.
You will, of course, want to either reduce the amount of money you must pay or, even better, receive a refund; TaxACT lends a hand here, by asking questions that are specific to deductions you may be able to take, such as medical expenses, mortgage interest and property tax payments. TaxACT also accounts for investment expenses, some business expenses and charitable contributions.
Free support -- which is available via the web, by phone or by e-mail -- is a nice bonus. Help isn't limited to using the TaxACT software, however; you can also get answers to basic tax questions. This feature alone may give TaxACT the edge over the competition.
Once you've supplied all of the necessary information, TaxACT can print your forms; you can also use 2nd Story Software's electronic filing option for faster processing and faster refunds. The federal e-filing service is included in the cost of TaxACT Ultimate Bundle, although there is a $7.95 charge for state e-filing.
2nd Story Software's TaxACT Ultimate Bundle offers outstanding value. Considering its low price, we are surprised and impressed at the high level of support and the free e-filing service that are included. Unless you have unique tax filing requirements, the TaxACT Ultimate Bundle is tough to beat.
Pros: Includes federal and state tax forms, electronic filing and J.K. Lasser tax guide; supports some types of small business returns; free support, including answers to basic tax questions
Cons: Some questions and answers are difficult to navigate, interface is a little stale
